ANDY – AZ – ADOPTED

** PUPDATE: THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO EXPRESSED INTEREST IN ANDY…WE HAVE RECEIVED A GREAT RESPONSE AND WILL NOT ACCEPT FURTHER APPLICATIONS FOR ANDY AT THIS TIME TO GIVE US TIME TO CHECK OUT THE POTENTIAL HOMES. **

Andy is living in a Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue foster home in Phoenix, Arizona. Only families in the Phoenix metro area will be considered. Please read entire listing before contacting us.

Andy is a four month old puppy. As with all puppies, he has loads of energy but has a fairly mild temperament. He gets along with other dogs, walks fairly well on a leash and is partially house trained.

We don’t know the puppy’s parentage. His adult size could be anything from 55 lbs. to 100 lbs.

Our puppies are family pets that live inside of the family home.

Puppies are only placed in homes with a youthful, adult resident dog of at least medium size that will play gently, but actively, with the puppy. This gives the puppy a mentor and a solid foundation for becoming part of the family.

Puppies are only adopted to a family where the applicant is at home at least part of the day. If no adult is home for 6-8 hours at a time, please do not apply.

Puppies will not be placed where there are small children in the home. Older children who are respectful of a dog’s boundaries will be considered, but please remember that Airedale puppies have very sharp teeth and nothing within reach is off limits from play or chewing.

The family will need to start basic training immediately.

Preference is always given to those with Airedale experience.

Applicants must have secure, visible fencing and a socialization and training plan in place.

Applicant’s current pets must be up to date on vaccines & heartworm/flea prevention and be altered.

The puppy will be placed under a foster-to-adopt contract until he is old enough to be neutered, which will be done at Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue’s expense, by their vet.

To be considered for this puppy, fill out an application. Adoption is not first come, first served. Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue and its fosters work diligently to find the right fit for each and every unique dog and puppy.

Adoption fee: $450

Winnie ADOPTED

(Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Winnie at the Shelter

This is Winnie.  Winnie is a very friendly and loving Airedale. She loves everyone.  She is 4years old, house trained, can be left alone in the house, walks on the lead and has some basic obedience.  Winnie was surrendered because she was aggressive with the other dog in the home, so we feel she will do best being the only dog. Winnie is also overweight and will need a home that will help her get the weight off. Winnie is in the  Albuquerque NM area.  If you are interested in giving her a forever home please contact SWAT and fill out an application.

Winnie is not a fan of cats.

If you are interested and have already submitted an application, please contact us to let us know you are interested in Winnie. UPDATE. WINNIE HAS BEEN ADOPTED

If you are interested in Winnie, please complete an application.

Hugo (Metro Phoenix, Arizona) ADOPTED

UPDATE: Hugo is in the perfect home.

Hugo needs a single female foster/adoptive home in the metropolitan Phoenix area with a securely fenced yard. You must be willing to continue Hugo’s current training. Hugo currently lives with a non-reactive small older dog, so he MIGHT be able to live with another non-reactive dog, but introductions with the trainer would be necessary.

Hugo is approximately 5 years old, 65#, neutered, housebroken, microchipped and up to date on all vaccinations. Hugo is calm in the house, although he gets excited at mealtime and would jump up and down if his owner didn’t insist that he sit quietly to wait.

Hugo has to be reminded not to rush through doorways. He is improving, but this is another area that needs to be consistently enforced.

In November 2021, we were contacted by a woman in Tucson who worked with a rescue in Mexico.  They had a 5 year old Airedale that was turned in because the owner could not afford to care for him. Hugo was emaciated and ill. SWAT agreed to take Hugo in to our rescue, but he was too ill to travel. The Mexico rescue treated him until he was healthy enough in January to make the trip, although he was still emaciated and had sarcoptic mange, parasites, etc. Once he came to SWAT he stayed with our vet for about a month. After good nutrition and medical care, he gained weight, grew some of his hair back and looked better.

We placed him in a foster to adopt home, but he was/is dog reactive when being walked, and the folks who took him on really did not have the ability to deal with training him or taking on a project dog, although they were very enthusiastic about doing the work needed on this special needs boy.

Hugo then spent a month with trainer Toni Drugmand to work on his dog aggression. While in training, he met with a couple who fell for him and adopted him.

The couple have continued Hugo’s training and love him very much. Sadly, for some unknown reason, Hugo is terrified of the husband.  There is no logical reason that this man would cause fear as he has a very calm, relaxed personality.

Hugo was fine with the man in the first home and has been fine with other men he has met.

The adopters have worked with trainers, their veterinarian, and a behaviorist, to no avail. Hugo is currently on anti anxiety medication to cope with the fear, but that is not working either. Hugo’s current family feel it is unfair to Hugo to keep him given the constant anxiety he is experiencing.  They say that he likes children and  likes other men, but cowers and becomes overly submissive with this man in particular.  The behaviorist suggested that he fears the “alpha male” of the house or this specific man possibly because the man reminds him of some past trauma.

The family says Hugo is otherwise a very well trained good boy,  He will walk by other dogs now without reacting, as long as the other dog is not reactive. If the other dog does react, Hugo is instantly ready to take him on.

We are thinking that a female home is what will work for him, and are seeking a willing foster home. He currently lives with a smaller non reactive older female Tibetan spaniel.  He spent a few days in training sessions with his current companion.    We would pay for lessons with Toni Drugmond to make sure introductions go well.

Benny – Utah ADOPTED

Update. Benny is ADOPTED

Meet Benny, he’s a sweet and loving 6-year-old neutered male Airedale, with a natural tail, who loves adventures and going on walks. He likes most dogs, loves chasing squirrels, chickens and small animals and thinks that cats are squeaky toys. He really enjoys going for rides in cars and sticking his head out the window. Benny would do best in a home with a family that is home with him most of the time and won’t leave him out in the yard unattended (he is Houdini in disguise). He loves being with people and prefers adults and kids over 12. Benny is being fostered in Utah and is up to date on all vaccinations.

addy – UT – ADOPTED

Addy 3 years old Salt Lake City Utah

Meet Addison aka Addy.  Addy is a sweet, fun, and loving 3-year-old who needs to be the only dog in the home.  She has a high prey drive and loves to chase cats, birds, chickens, or anything that moves quickly.  She loves playing with toys and balls.  She knows some basic commands and walks well on a leash.  Addy is very energetic and needs to be walked at least once a day, although twice a day would be the better.  She would do best in a home with no children or older children as she is very mouthy and jumps up when meeting people.  Addy needs a home that has the time to work on socialization and training.

Addy is being fostered in Salt Lake City, Utah. Only families in the Salt Lake area and the greater Wasatch front will be considered.

MOOSE – UT – ADOPTED

Photo of Moose

ADOPTED! Moose is an energetic, 1-2 year old Airedale mix that weighs about 59 lbs. He loves going for rides in the car and for walks. He is super sweet and loves to cuddle. He is crate trained and house trained. He enjoys being wherever his people are and loves chasing and playing with toys, leaves, sticks, and more.

He would do best in an active home without small children. He cannot be in a home with cats, small dogs or other small animals. He is still learning how to walk nicely on a leash and gets very excited to see other dogs. He does have some food guarding and toy sharing struggles.

Moose came into rescue because his first family abandoned him, and the family that found him at a warehouse couldn’t handle his energy and didn’t have time to train him.

Moose is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped.

ADOPTED!!

Moose is being fostered in Salt Lake City, UT.

AJAX UT – ADOPTED

Photo of AjaxUPDATE: ADOPTED
***
Ajax is a smaller Airedale, approximately 1 year old, neutered, and a happy, energetic boy puppy.   He loves going on walks and chasing any ball that is thrown or moving.  He is excited about everything all of the time and wants to be loved and petted.  We don’t know much about Ajax as he came to rescue as a stray.  Ajax would do best in a home without small children or small pets as he is very mouthy and loves to chase small things (cats and squirrels especially).  He would be great with an active family who enjoys keeping Ajax’s mind and body engaged in fun and rewarding activities.

Ajax is being fostered in Salt Lake City, UT.  ADOPTED

DARBY – AZ – ADOPTED

UPDATE: ADOPTED!
***
We are currently discussing Darby with one of our approved applicants to see if they might be the perfect home for Darby. If you might be interested, please let us know. If you don’t have an application on file, that is the first step in the adoption process. Darby is currently in the Phoenix area and we prefer to place in the Phoenix or Tucson areas, if possible.

Darby is 4 years old, is 67 lbs. (should be closer to 60 lbs). She has been well taken care of all her life. Her mom had to have serious surgery and made the sad decision that Darby needed a new family.

Darby is sweet with people .. a typical energetic rambunctious youngster. She appears to be non-reactive to other dogs, so hopefully not too hard to walk. She was an only dog, but frequently visited a family member with a male dog her size and was fine with him. She showed a little too much unhealthy interest in the kitty at the vet and has not lived with cats.

Darby has not lived with children, but is reported to be fine with the visiting grandchildren.

Darby is spayed and microchipped, does not have heartworm, tick fever or Valley Fever and is up to date on all her vaccinations.

MURPHY – AZ – ADOPTED

UPDATE: ADOPTED

Name:  Murphy

Murphy 1 year old
Murphy in Arizona

Age: 1 year

Weight: 66 pounds

Location:  Phoenix, Arizona

Contact: Rose McAuliffe  623-362-1141
Please leave a message.  Rose returns calls in the evenings or on the weekends.  If you have not yet filled out an application, please click on the following link to read our policies and procedures and complete an application form:  Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue Adoption Procedure

Murphy has a very high energy level, as all 1 year old Airedales do. He needs a lot of exercise,  at least 1 to 2 hours a day.

Murphy is very sweet, and has had some obedience training,  which , for the most part he considers an academic subject rather than a skill for practical application .

Murphy likes to play rough with other dogs and would not be a suitable companion for small or old dogs or other small animals. Murphy has not lived with children.  He would probably be fine with older well trained children, but would not be suitable for a family with young children living in the home.

Murphy belonged to an Airedale-experienced man who thought that he had the time for a young Airedale.  Unfortunately, due to his job and travel, he had to leave Murphy far too often and realized that it was not fair to Murphy.

Murphy is a great young Airedale who will need a fenced yard to run in, people who are home most of the time,  have Airedale experience, will be firm and consistent and have the time to continue his training.

If you have already completed an application and are interested in learning more about Murphy, contact Rose and let her know that you have submitted an application. 623-362-1141
