Duke – New Mexico – ADOPTED

Duke is a neutered male Airedale between the age of 1-2 yr. He came through the shelter system and was reportedly too energetic for small children. He has been fostered with 3 Airedales, 2 females and 1 male, and despite their fussing at him he has offered no response other than to turn away. It appears that he had spent little, if any, time in the house, so early on he was confined in a doggy play pen when we could not watch him. After 2+ weeks he had more access in the house but with supervision. Now when we are home he has free access (dog door) but is confined when we are gone for a time. He has picked up the TV remote…and thought it was a toy so some supervision is still needed…but most other household items he has left alone.  He likes watching TV (perhaps he just wanted to change the channel). He likes dog toys and will get them out of the toy basket.

We have about 1 ac. fenced off the back of the house and he can use the dog door to go out when he likes. He does like to spend more time out in the morning but also likes to be with people and most of the time will be with one of us. Initially it was obvious he had had no training and did not know what to do with his adolescent energy. His two forms of play were with our 7 yr old female Airedale, who engaged
him in chase. Then he learned to chase the ball that is retrieved by our 7 r old male Airedale. That has become very competitive and despite our male fussing at Duke….there have been no altercations. Duke is very fast and quick and being able to run “all out” seems to be something he really enjoys. After a play period he is glad to come in the house and crash.

Duke had never been groomed before so we are taking that slowly. He can be a little fearful, esp. of the clippers, but is also curious so will overcome a fear quickly. He has the densest coat of any dog I have seen. The groomer needs to go slow and be patient. We have worked on basic house manners. He is not allowed on the couch and he has done well with house training to the point that we do not watch him all the time. He will put his paws up on things but because there has been no food on the counter he has…as yet…not
learned to counter surf. He is still in training 101. He needs leash work …working on sit etc. He is fed in the play pen and goes in there automatically at meal times.

He is more excitable (and a bit mouthy) when he has been confined for a period but exercise helps him settle down. He also likes being with people so being left in a backyard would most likely lead to his being bored and getting into trouble. In a new home he will need a consistent routine and if an only dog will need some play time with other dogs to maintain good socialization.

He LOVES to eat and inhales his food.

Izzy – New Mexico – ADOPTED

ADOPTED!

Izzy, is a 4 year old spayed female Airedale Terrier. She is a big girl.  She was 87# when she came in to rescue. She is now down to 79# and probably should weigh about 70-75#. She was owned by an elderly couple. After the husband went into the hospital, the wife couldn’t handle her. She is sweet, but a typical young Airedale and large.

Despite her laid back nature she can move fast when she wants to and is not at all safe around cats, chickens, etc. She is a master counter-surfer. Nothing is safe on the counters!

She loves affection and loves to play with other dogs. She can be a rough player, so a small dog would not be a suitable companion. She is house trained. She has graduated to sleeping in her foster family’s bedroom on her bed and sleeps quietly through the night.

It would be great if she had a family with another dog or teenagers to keep her active, or a very active person, as she may be prone to gaining weight. She rides in the car like a dream—and doesn’t even bark when she sees other dogs. In fact, she doesn’t bark a lot period, reserving her energy for those times when it is really important (like the middle of the night when the coyotes howl.)

October 1, 2017:  When 11 month old puppy Airedale Edison came in to rescue, he was limping and it was obvious that there was something very wrong with his left rear leg. Instead of being straight, it bent outwards at the ankle. An x-ray revealed that he had sustained an injury to the fibula at the “ankle” end which stopped the growth plate. The tibia (inner leg bone) kept growing, resulting in the lower part of his leg twisting to the outside.

The leg could be repaired by what is known as a corrective osteotomy where a wedge of bone is removed, the bone is straightened and the leg is pinned in the correct position.  Once the bone heals, the dog should be able to do anything any other dog can do, without limitations.  It is a tricky surgery because there is not much room for the pins at the ankle joint.  It is also of utmost importance to keep the dog from doing too much before the bone has healed.  Because of his very young age, we decided to go forward with the surgery.

March 19, 2018 The surgery was a great success!  We wish Edison and his new family a long and happy life!!

Brody in Utah – ADOPTED

Meet Brody!  He is a 3 year-old neutered male Airedale and is full of curiosity and energy.  He has a very sweet and affectionate temperament and is looking for someone who has a lot of love and patience to give him.  This young boy really likes to play and loves to run. Brody is definitely a women’s dog….he likes Foster Dad fine, but he really likes being with Foster Mom. He has a high prey drive and is anxious to use his skills and speed to catch any varmint who’s trying to get into his territory be it mouse, rat, cat, skunk, snake or spider.   Brody is timid when experiencing new things and will need someone who can introduce him to things slowly and with confidence.  He is afraid of loud noises, thunder, fireworks, gunshots, etc.  He loves to go on walks or hikes and being in the car.  He is crate and house-trained.  Brody has many typical Airedale traits of digging in everything, being mouthy, chewing on anything, and sticking his nose where ever he can and should not be off leash as he will chase wildlife, skateboards, cats, etc., and will not return.

Teddy in Utah – ADOPTED

ADOPTED!

Teddy is a four to five year old, neutered, male Airedale that has an awesome personality and great ears to go with it. He likes other dogs both big and small as long as they don’t try to be the boss of him. He’s been to cage-free doggie day care and did well with most of the dogs. Teddy loves being with his people and has been around children and adults of all ages. Teddy is well behaved, walks nicely on a leash, and loves to cuddle in bed and have belly rubs. He knows some basic commands and is pretty eager to please. He loves going for car rides and on walks. Once he gets to know you, the clown in Teddy comes out and he’s a joy to have around. He is a gentle and loving boy.

Teddy would do best in a home where someone is home all of the time or can take him with them. He does not do well left alone because he has pretty severe separation anxiety, and this cannot be solved by putting him in a crate or with medication. He will destroy the crate (wire or plastic) and will really hurt himself in the process. He also has some issues with men and will need time and patience for him to trust them. It’s for these reasons that Teddy is a special needs boy. Teddy is being fostered in Salt Lake City, UT.

Bonnie in NM – ADOPTED

ADOPTED!

Bonnie is an absolutely delightful dog who was a companion to a gentleman who died. She was a house dog and constant companion. She has nice manners, knows her name and even comes when you call her despite being an Airedale. We started on her grooming today and even though she was a little frightened she stood beautifully. She has the typical Airedale energy, is curious and likes to play. She is reported to be between 8- 9 yrs and appears in good health but we will be completing her vet work in a few days. We consider her medium sized and are estimating her weight around 60#. She is currently living with 2 Airedales and they seem to be doing well together. Please consider adopting Bonnie you will just love her sweet nature.  Bonnie is being fostered in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area.

UPDATE.  LIZZIE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Lizzie is a three year old, 65 lb., spayed female who needs an Airedale experienced family that will continue her training. She is choosy about her dog companions and would do best with a non-reactive male dog her size. She did not do well on a cat test. She reacts towards small dogs and cats when out in the front yard, as well as skateboards, cars and trucks.

She’s done great in the house when we are home, she listens, settles well, eats next to our older Airedale, etc., all without a problem. Add the younger Airedale into that mix and she goes after him. She hates, hates, hates being crated and gets quite destructive to anything she can get to while in the crate (including the crate).

She is very smart and picks up on things very fast. She opens the door and lets herself out. She can open up gates, drawers, cabinets, etc. She sits, lays, walks on a leash now all very easily. She takes things nicely (treats). We are working on the jumping on people and now she jumps up kind of in front of you instead of putting her feet on you. She does bark more than most Airedales, but she’s been getting better in that area too. She really is a wonderful Airedale for the right person and she is really easy to take care of, IF you are firm in your expectations. She will run someone over who doesn’t keep their boundaries and isn’t consistent. She is the kind of girl that likes routine and is already doing what she needs to when you follow the routine.

​Chip is a 2 yr old male that came to us as an owner surrender to the shelter.  He is neutered and very healthy and a typical 2 yr old adolescent. He has been started on basic training and house training but will need to be in a home where training will be continued.  He learns quickly and his attention span is good for his age. He is currently living with 3 female Airedales and would do best with a non dominant playmate his ​size.

He is very people focused and likes being with his people but can also entertain himself chasing squirrels and playing with another dog. But left alone for long hours he will get “creative.” Typical of a youngster he is fond of shoes and  gloves but given a kong he will rest quietly after exercise.  Chip is medium size at approximately 75#
Chip is being fostered in the Albuquerque area.

Noah of NM (Adopted)

Meet Noah (ADOPTED). He was discovered by one of our volunteers who found him listed on a local yard sale website. The listing described him as “a very energetic, very sweet one year old Airedale who loves everyone and has never met a stranger. He loves running, playing in the water, hikes and his toys. He would do best in a home where he has another dog to play with. We have given him a loving home but with a new baby in the house we are unable to give him the attention he needs.”

Our volunteer was able to bring Noah into rescue and brought him to Las Cruces where he was met by a second volunteer who brought him the rest of the way to Silver City. We updated his vaccinations and got him bathed and groomed and ready for his new forever home. He was adopted by the volunteer who helped transport him –it was love at first sight for the entire family and Noah has doggie sisters to play with and humans to give him lots of love and attention.

Stache – Utah – ADOPTED

Say Hello to Stache­­­!  He’s a 14 month old, typical Airedale puppy.  He’s got a lot of energy and a super sweet personality.  Stache is a taller Airedale but fairly lean at 65 lbs.  His likes are playing and digging in the yard, being petted and loved (oh and did I mention being petted), long walks, playing with toys, and sniffing everything he comes into contact with – he knows great adventures are out there. His dislikes are tiled floors, vacuums, thunder, being alone, and sharing his food or toys.  He is dreaming of an outdoorsy and active family where he can be the only four-legged member.  He has a tendency to vocalize everything he needs and is incredibly smart.StacheFace

Stache would do best in a home without cats, small children or elderly.  He will need a home where his people are with him a lot and give him a job to do.  He needs a great deal of patience and socialization where he does not have to compete with other dogs.  He is just learning how to be in the house and in a crate, and is learning a bunch of new things (dishwashers are scary as are bathrooms – but he figured out the bed just fine 😉  ).  He will need to go to obedience training immediately following adoption and must be exercised multiple times a day.

Stache is adjusting well to city life and seems to enjoy being in the house.  He walks through the house like he owns the place 🙂  He is no longer afraid of the different textures of flooring, although he still hates the vacuum (but what Airedale doesn’t).  He loves to play ball and run around the yard watching everything that goes by and chases leaves in that sweet puppy way.  He has such exuberance for people and is still learning to not jump up on them.   He is really sweet and once he’s gotten a lot of attention, he settles down and is happy to follow you from room to room.  He definitely prefers to be with people and gets extremely excited with other animals.   He definitely cannot be with cats or small dogs, he loves chasing everything and I’m sure would think of cats or small dogs as a great new toy.
