RODNEY Update: ADOPTED

Rodney has been adopted and seems to be settling right in to his new home.
**

Thank you to Kelly and Frank for fostering Rodney, getting him used to living in a home and teaching him what it means to be a family member.

**

Rodney is very sweet and friendly, but he has never lived in a house. He will be 4 years old on April 2nd. He was surrendered because the family’s 3 year old child was afraid of getting knocked down by him. He needs to be house trained, leash trained, everything trained (Rose reports that Rodney actually walks pretty well on leash!).

Chester – Utah – Adopted

ChesterBall

ADOPTED!

Handsome Chester in Utah is looking for a special home.  Chester is a sweet gentleman — well as gentlemanly as any Airedale can be, because he still wipes his wet beard on any leg he can find 🙂  He has a very gentle temperament, unless you are a cat (who are his nemesis I think), and loves to be with his people. He is a bit of a couch hog and would prefer to be with a family that is home more than they are gone. He enjoys traveling in the car, slow meandering walks, lots of hugs and loves, and long drinks of cool water. Chester is looking for a family that will support him through his challenges and that has a more relaxed atmosphere/schedule.

Chester is a special needs boy. He has one leg that is slightly shorter than the other and is missing a toe or two on that same foot. As a result he will be on a low/medium dose of medication for life to help manage the pain and arthritis that is a result of the strain put on his joints. He also cannot walk long distances and may need a ramp to be able to get into vehicles.

Chester is 6 years old, approximately 70 lbs., neutered, and up to date on shots.

If you live in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico or Utah and are interested in adopting Chester, please contact us.  Adoption will require an application form, references and a home visit. More information at www.swairedalerescue.org

Teddy – Arizona – Adopted

Teddy is 9 years old (DOB 01/09/2006) and weighs 130 lb., which is about 30 lbs. more than his frame should be carrying. He and his owner used to go everywhere together, but for the last few years, there has been more food going in than calories going out. Teddy’s owner has had to move into assisted living and the family asked us to find Teddy a new home.

Luckily for big Teddy, we had a wonderful family waiting for a senior Airedale who needed them.

Migs New Adventure

Migs in the Maz
Migs in the Maze

Thought you might be interested in Migs’ latest contribution to science.

Research is being conducted by the Canine Science Collaboratory at ASU with the goal of establishing a behavioral test that can be used to understand the development of human Alzheimer’s disease. They’ve already determined that the symptoms are alike.

The test itself was very straight forward. A maze with six arms is set up, with food in each arm, and the dog, under differing conditions, is supposed to go to each arm and find the food reward. There are two “training” runs where I go in with her and lead her to the reward in each arm. Then she goes again by herself and finds the food on the floor. The next 3 runs, the food is placed in a dish anchored to the gate and the dog goes thru again to find the food in the dishes. At the start of each run the dog starts the run at a different entry point. On this set, the owner has to sit quietly and do the Milan thing – No touch, No talk, No eye contact. That was hard. Migs found all the food on the first runs. On the last 3 she left one un-found. She’d go back to ones she checked before a couple of time and then she went to the middle of ring and I could see her (from the corner of my eye that wasn’t looking at her) glancing all around – at me, at the testers and then she just laid down and stayed there.

All the obedience work which taught her to look to me for clues and no clues were coming! Poor girl.

They are looking for as many breeds and ages as they can get and then they’ll start developing correlations if they’re there. Anyway, Migs had lots of new people to pet her and she did get a bagful of treats so was a good deal for her.

Here’s the verbatim paragraph on the research:

“Currently, despite the amazing similarity in Alzheimer’s like symptoms that can emerge in dogs, there is no behavioral test that can predict dogs with human Alzheimer’s-like symptoms. Once a behavioral test can be established, the same kind of research being employed by canine geneticists which has offered massive insights into our understanding of human cancer can be used to understand the development of human Alzheimer’s disease.”

If anyone else in the Phoenix area wants to participate, the study coordinator can be reached @ ASUdram@gmail.com. They said feel free to publish it. The test is held on the main campus at ASU.

Dixie – New Mexico – Adopted

Dixie Sitting Dixie Standing*ADOPTED*

Dixie is just over 1 yr old and was an owner surrender.

She is friendly and affectionate

She is medium size and has good house manners especially for her age. She has a lovely natural tail. She is being fostered with 2 male dogs, horses, an inside cat and a barn cat.

Dixie can be bossy with female dogs so will do best in a home with just male dogs. She likes to play but is not overly excitable or hyper. She does need some supervision appropriate to her young age. Dixie has never had formal training but is currently getting some training in her foster home. They are working on leash walking in the presence of other barking dogs and she responds well to consistent direction. We would like to keep Dixie in the Albuquerque area to be sure gets more training. She would benefit from being in a class and learning to socialize with dogs of different sizes

If you are interested in adopting Dixie, please complete the Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue online application form.

UPDATE:  Dixie has been ADOPTED

FAITH – Arizona – ADOPTED!

Sweet Faith

ADOPTED!
Faith is an 8 year old spayed female being fostered in Tucson, Arizona . She is up to date on vaccinations and negative for heartworm, tick fever and valley fever. She has always been well cared for. She is used to staying home alone with a working family, using her dog door to freely move between house and yard and going for walks through the neighborhood every day. She grew up with children from age 5 through the late teens. She rides quietly in the car and walks on leash without pulling or making any fuss. She is affectionate, but calm and not a real cuddler other than a few minutes in the morning and whenever you come home.

Faith LOVES playing with other dogs – she plays rough and likes to body slam and sounds as though she is ready to tear the other dog’s throat out, but she is all play and other dogs know this.

Pretty Faith in the ConeShe had surgery on 10/8/2014 to have a wart taken off her eyelid that was irritating her eye and an epulis from her gum. She now has a clean bill of health and is ready for her new home.

FaithWe are looking for someone with a dog door to a large secure yard and who will take Faith on daily walks and either have another large playful dog, or make sure she gets regular play dates and/or visits to the dog park.

Please complete the Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue online application form if you are interested in adopting Faith. If you have already filed an application, contact us to let us know you are interested in Faith of Arizona.  Note that priority will be given to applicants located in Arizona.Faith Waiting for Breakfast

Macy is a 3 year old, 80 lb. (should weigh about 65#) spayed female.  She is up to date on all vaccinations and microchipped.

Macy has been dearly loved by her owner, who has owned her since she was given to her as a puppy.  Unfortunately, Macy’s owner is now in college and cannot keep a large Airedale in her dorm room.  Relatives tried to give Macy a temporary home, but the terrier who lived in the home and Macy did not get along.

Macy is always happy, has had a lot of obedience training and will be a pleasure to anyone lucky enough to give her a home.

Macy is in Phoenix, Arizona.  If you are interested in adopting Macy, please complete the Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue online application form. If you have already submitted an application, contact us to let us know you are interested in Macy of Arizona.  We do not ship our dogs.

Jack – Arizona – Adopted

Jack2 Jack of Arizona

*ADOPTED*

Jack is a very handsome, boisterous 6 year old boy. Jack’s former owner was not able to take him when moving out of state. Jack is very affectionate,  He has a typical Airedale attention span and seems much younger than his six years! He will benefit from some obedience training, Jack does not know how to interact with other dogs and will probably be best as an only dog until he learns some manners. Jack would be great for a very active mature family.  At 70 lbs., he is a big boy and could easily knock over youngsters.

We want to place Jack either in Phoenix or Tucson where we have trainers who can help make sure Jack’s new home is successful.

If you are interested in adopting Jack, please complete the Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue online application form. If you have already submitted an application, contact us to let us know you are interested in Jack in Arizona.   We do not ship our dogs.

ADOPTED!
Callie has been well cared for and loved her entire life. Unfortunately, a change in the family’s circumstances have forced them to ask Airedale Rescue to find Callie a new loving home.

Callie is a healthy, happy, energetic 6 year old, 61 lb., spayed, Airedale girl. She is up to date on all vaccinations and microchipped. She has lived with a male Labrador retriever most of her life and her dad says she is the star of the dog park. She will play with any size dog – she bows her front down while wagging trying to get anyone to run with her.

Callie has not done well with cats when she met them in the past.

Callie is currently in the Phoenix, Arizona, area (Chandler).  If you are interested in adopting Callie, please complete the Southwest Airedale Terrier Rescue online application form. If you have already submitted an application, contact us to let us know you are interested in Callie of Arizona.  We do not ship our dogs.

Marla – Arizona – Adopted

Marla and her new family hit it off immediately. Marla and Nash were chasing each other around the yard and Nash showed off for the new girl by jumping into the pool when we were investigating that part of the yard, which he apparently never does. He has been missing his big sister who died a while ago and is delighted to have a new girl to boss him around.  They are a really nice family and I felt very comfortable about Marla joining them even though we are going to miss her a lot!

They are changing her name slightly .. to Marly, only spelled Majerle;) Her family explains: we started the sports theme with jordan because she was the aire jordan then with nash so we couldn’t help going with thunder dan majerle.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
